About Pat's Garden

Pat with Meadowlark

Pat Cochenour, a gifted daylily hybridizer, passed away on December 29, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. Pat was a valued member of the Northern Virginia Daylily Society, the National Capital Daylily Club, the Reston Garden Club, and the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS).

After her first introduction in 2001, Pat went on to register 65 daylilies. Pat worked extensively in unusual forms and spiders, and also created distinctive doubles, polymerous, and small forms. Remarkably, she achieved all of this from two rented garden plots and continues to receive recognition posthumously for her daylilies. As of 2022, Pat's daylilies have received 8 Honorable Mention awards, 4 Awards of Merit, the Annie T. Giles Small Flower award and the Early Season Bloom award from the American Hemerocallis Society. Pat was noted for the whimsical names she gave her daylilies, using popular culture references and clever phrasing. For many years, Pat served as liaison for the daylily collection at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA, and a stone sculpture was installed in her memory at Meadowlark, surrounded by some of her introductions.

Pat transferred management of her introductions and seedlings to Janice Kennedy, a daylily friend and long time supporter of Pat's hybridizing program. Janice maintains a complete collection of Pat's daylilies at her Northern Virginia garden and has evaluated her remaining seedlings for future introductions.
